Mackay is nestled below some of the tallest peaks in Idaho, making us a unique find! Nicknamed "The Top of Idaho," Mackay is one of the highest cities in elevation in Idaho. Mt. Borah, Idaho’s tallest peak at 12,662 feet is just 25 miles North of Mackay. You can enjoy some of the best mountain climbing in the Lost River Valley area where we have 9 of the 11 highest mountains in Idaho.
Mackay’s history is centered around a rich mining influence and currently is surrounded by ranching, farming and recreation.
Take pleasure in some of the best fly fishing in the state on the famous Big Lost River which finds its way through our valley. Mackay and the Lost River Valley also offer outstanding high mountain lakes, great hiking on over 250 miles of trail, hunting, snowmobiling, hang gliding, paragliding, golfing, boating, water skiing and ice fishing on the Mackay Reservoir located only 6 miles North of Mackay.
